Toyofuji Holds On-board Disaster Drill Demonstration |
|
On 5 November, Toyofuji Shipping held its 24th annual on-board disaster drill on the HOUSHO MARU, which was in port at Berth I-2 at the Meiko Center. The drill was conducted with the assistance of the Nagoya Coast Guard Office and the Tokai Municipal Fire Department and was attended by some 80 representatives of Toyota Motor Corporation and other cargo-owners, port services companies and other affiliated companies.
The aim of the disaster drill was to improve the skills of crew members in the prevention of fires and minimization of damage in the event of fire. The scenario involved a fire breaking out in the kitchen that, despite initial efforts to extinguish it with fire extinguishers and hoses, spread to other areas of the ship and caused injuries among the crew. After fire extinguishing and evacuation drills involving 12 crew members, a new element was added to the exercise this year, with the Nagoya Coast Guard Office and Tokai Municipal Fire Department working together to bring the injured off the vessel using a ladder-truck and transporting them to hospital by ambulance.
With the aim of ensuring safe, reliable and quality transportation services, Toyofuji Shipping places the utmost priority on safe navigation and is committed to the active promotion of safety activities.

Toyofuji Exhibits at Messe Nagoya 2010 |
|
Messe Nagoya 2010 was held over four days on 27-30 October, with Toyofuji taking part for the fifth time. Launched in 2006, Messe Nagoya is a cross-industrial international trade fair that showcases the latest information and innovative ideas from a wide range of fields. This year’s fair, which was held as an affiliated event of the 10th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) that was held in Nagoya this year, attracted 450 exhibitors and 42,979 visitors.
Messe Nagoya's theme for this year was “Environment and Energy.” In line with this theme, Toyofuji Shipping presented its new ballast water treatment system, which, in a first for a Japanese vessel, Toyofuji has recently installed in its new vessels. Sea water ballast has the potential to spread exotic species around the oceans of the world, and Toyofuji stressed the need for urgent action to protect the ocean.
The Toyofuji exhibit also featured models and illustrations depicting the history of power-driven vessels and the future of ships powered by new forms of energy. Toyofuji’s “dream ship of the future,” which is designed in the shape dolphin to represent the Toyofuji logo, attracted a great deal of attention from Messe visitors, who were drawn by its fusion of natural energies and the propulsion mechanisms of animals.

May 2010 TRANS FUTURE 8, the First Japanese Vessel with a Ballast Water Treatment System, Goes into Service |
|
On 25 May the TRANS FUTURE 8, an ocean-going car ferry, went into service. This 2000-vehicle car ferry is the first ship in a four vessel series planned for China. The other three vessels are scheduled to go into service in September and October this year, and April next year. This will enable Toyofuji to provide increased carrying capacity and an enhanced service in response to transportation needs such as the increasing numbers of complete vehicles headed for China, and also general cargo.
This is the first time a Japanese shipping company has installed a ballast water treatment system in its vessels to help prevent marine pollution, demonstrating Toyofuji's dedication to environmental performance. This system kills organisms in the ballast water to prevent their proliferation into other marine areas.
Toyofuji is also committed to energy-saving and safety. This vessel features a wind wall, which reduces wind resistance, and a hull profile with minimal resistance and propulsion designed with the latest fluid technology. Toyofuji has also introduced a fleet monitor, which enables real-time management of the vessel's navigation information, and an integrated bridge observation system for enhanced observation while the vessel is at sea. Symbols are used for safety signs and markings inside hatches for improved visibility and legibility, providing a safer work environment.

|
A traditional soba noodle-making party was held on 2 April at Akatsuki Gakuen, a local children's nursing home in Tokai city, which has been supported by Toyofuji for many years. Together with Toyofuji executives and employees the children once again experienced noodle-making, kneading the buckwheat flour into dough, rolling it out, and then cutting it with a knife. Later, they enjoyed eating the noodles they had diligently made during the entertaining event, which encourages cooperation among the children. The children had a wonderful time, and were clearly enjoying their spring vacation. This will surely be a day for them to remember.
