November 2018 Toyofuji Holds 32nd On-Board Disaster Drill Demonstration

On November 14, Toyofuji Shipping held the company's "32nd On-Board Disaster Drill Demonstration," conducted under the instruction of the Nagoya Coast Guard Office and Tokai Municipal Fire Department aboard the Hosho Maru (shipowner: Miyazaki Sangyo Kaiun Co., Ltd.), in port at Toyota Motor Corporation's Meiko Center Berth I-5.
The drill was attended by some 80 individuals, including members from Toyofuji Shipping and representatives from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism's Chubu District Transport Bureau and Toyota Motor Corporation, as well as cargo shippers and affiliated companies in the marine transport and port services industries.

The aim of the disaster drill was to increase safety awareness among Toyofuji employees, other affiliated firms, and crew members, and to provide practical training in fire prevention and response. Training involved fighting a fire breaking out inside the vessel. Additionally, in what was the first such training of its kind for Toyofuji, drills also focused on emergency evacuation and departure from port, including conveying injured personnel, in the event of a tsunami caused by a major earthquake.

Drills began with initial efforts by crew members to extinguish the fire, along with training in the use of fire hoses. Based on the fire spreading further, exercises also included a joint drill with the Nagoya Coast Guard Office in cooling the vessel with water sprayed from fire hoses on the patrol boat "Ayuzuki." This was followed by training in which crew members practiced severing the mooring ropes (approximately 10-cm ropes connecting the vessel to the pier) to enable an emergency departure in the event of a tsunami caused by the Tonankai earthquake. In addition to crew member training, the exercise also included training in rescuing injured crew members using the Nagoya Coast Guard Office helicopter "Kamitaka" and a Tokai Municipal Fire Department hook-and-ladder truck.

Currently, with approximately 80% of domestically manufactured cars being transported by sea, marine transport plays a crucial role as a major channel supporting the automobile industry. Toyofuji Shipping continues to give top priority to the issue of safe operations, conducting intensive safety programs with affiliated companies and promoting preparedness for large-scale natural disasters with the aim of achieving "zero accidents and zero disasters."
